A building consent may (or may not) be required prior to the installation of a tent or marquee.
Do you require a building consent?
Schedule 1 of the Building Act 2004 has provision for tents, marquees (and similar lightweight structures) without a building consent, that meet the following criteria:
- does not exceed 100m2 in floor area; and
- is to be, or has been, used for a period of not more than 1 month.
Other potential requirements
Your building consent will also be checked for planning compliance. Have a look at Council's resource consent information online or contact Council's Duty Planner on 03 546 0200 to discuss your project.
Council has set fees for marquee consents. They are based on average processing times and number of inspections. Please note: if your application requires longer to process or re-inspections are required, you will receive an additional invoice.
Council is required to collect levies for the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, and BRANZ. These levies are based on the value of works $20,000 and over and are explained in the Building Unit Fees and Charges.
