Marquee consents

A building consent may (or may not) be required prior to the installation of a tent or marquee.

Do you require a building consent?

Schedule 1 of the Building Act 2004 has provision for tents, marquees (and similar lightweight structures) without a building consent, that meet the following criteria:

  • does not exceed 100m2 in floor area; and
  • is to be, or has been, used for a period of not more than 1 month.

Resource consent

Your building consent will also be checked for compliance against the Resource Management Act 1991, and the Nelson Resource Management Plan (NRMP).  Have a look at Council's resource consent information online.

Fees

Council is required to collect levies for the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, and BRANZ.  These levies are based on the value of works and are explained in the Building Unit Fees and Charges.
